Tubberclair GAA Club Notes – 8th February 2015

Fergal hangs up the boots

It was with inevitable sadness that all Tubberclair followers learned of the retirement of the great Fergal Wilson at the end of last year. This news had been kept quiet by all Tubberclair people as we are all still hoping that Fergal may still one day pull on the green and gold of his beloved club for one final season, but it seems Fergal is adamant that his playing days are over and who can begrudge a man who dedicated so much to our club over the years. Constant physical pain from all the injuries picked up playing for both club and county over the years have forced Fergal to hang up the boots for the final time.

Fergal’s playing career started in Tubberclair National school where he won a staggering four Comortas na mBun Scoil winners medals including three in a row from ’91 to ’93. It was here that his superior ability as a Gaelic footballer was forged, and with his older brother Dermot playing senior football with Westmeath at this time there was great anticipation that the young Fergal Wilson would one day follow in his footsteps.

Thankfully this did indeed turn out to be the case and Tubberclair GAA club was privileged to be able to nurture Fergal up through the underage ranks on his journey to inter county stardom where he would pick up championship medals at U14, U16 and two minor championships. The most memorable of these for club followers was the Minor B championship win in 1996 where as a sixteen year old, Fergal scored the winning point with the last kick of the game, a free forty meters out on the sideline in wet conditions. From that day on it was evident that both Tubberclair and Westmeath had an exceptional talent on their hands and success would inevitably follow for both.

Fergal represented Westmeath at all underage levels and in 1999, his first year out of minor grade he made it on to the U21 panel as their youngest player. This would prove to be a memorable year as they captured the Leinster and All Ireland championship for the first time with Fergal as a starring player at centre forward. This was a very proud time for Tubberclair to have a player on this historic team. They would go on to regain the Leinster championship in 2000 once again with Fergal as a prominent figure. Fergal played with the Westmeath senior team from 2001 to 2011 where he won three National League Division 2 medals and also was a starting player on the historic team to win the Leinster championship in 2004 where he was this time joined on the team by club mate Gary Connaughton. Fergal also represented Leinster where he also won a Railway cup medal. All of these wonderful achievements with Westmeath brought great pride to everyone from the Club.

At club level Fergal won two Intermediate championships in 2002 and 2009 where he was a pivotal figure in both campaigns, reaching a Leinster final in ’09 where we were unfortunate not to win. In all of his years as a prominent county footballer Fergal always spoke with great pride about his beloved club Tubberclair and how much it meant to him to win championships with his best friends and the lads he grew up with. Fergal was always a dedicated club man and always helps out with coaching at underage level when asked. He was joint manager of the successful U21 team last year and hopefully will be again. We are also privileged in Tubberclair that Fergal is a teacher and coach in the Marist College where a lot of our young players attend and can avail of his knowledge and guidance.

On behalf of all Tubberclair people the Club wishes to take this opportunity to thank Fergal for so many years of commitment and enjoyment over his stellar career and we wish him the very best in the future. And maybe when the sun shines in June he may be coaxed back into the green and gold again! (A sincere thank you to Alan Keegan for his kind assistance with this piece- Tubberclair PRO)

Tubberclair GAA Club Notes - 4th January 2015

LMS_IMAGE

click here for more info and rules

AGM- 4th January 2015:

Our club AGM took place in the GAA clubhouse on Sunday, the 4th January last, commencing at 6pm.

The meeting was extremely well attended and a very positive discussion in relation to the club’s activities over the past 12 months and plans for 2015 took place. Outgoing Chairman Pat Cooper commenced the meeting by wishing everyone in the Club a happy New Year and then ran through the agenda for the evening. Outgoing Club Secretary, Alan Keegan, read the minutes of the 2013 AGM and this was followed by a very comprehensive Report from our Minor Secretary, Adrian Dolan, which included updates of the year’s activities at underage, from our nursery up to Minor grade. A big thank you to all our underage co-ordinators who provided detailed and very positive reports on their respective groups, with a special mention to our Under 10s and 14s who won trophies during the course of the year. Adrian also thanked all the team managements for their work during the year, along with thanking all the parents, children and our underage sponsors for their continued commitment to the Club.

This was followed by Minor Chairman, Martin McCabe’s address, which as always, hit some salient points. Martin quoted from a recent article by Billy Keane, which included the quote from a former teacher in a school in Kerry, which stated that “All Irelands are won in Junior Infants”. It reinforced the importance of children playing Gaelic football from an early age, both in the GAA Club and the local schools. Martin (like Adrian) also made specific reference to the very successful Street League at the end of last season for the grades up to and including Under 10s and the involvement of our adult players with the teams and indeed their involvement in some of our underage teams last year also. This is something which the Club is fostering and we want to see continuing into the future. Martin also outlined the GAA’s coaching philosophy among the various age groups, as follows-

Age 6-12 “Playing to learn”- Children should be learning the skills of the game, where winning is not the priority:

Age 12 – 15- “Learning to compete”:

Under 16 & Minor- “Competing to win”.

Martin also outlined that the amalgamation with Maryland/Tang at Under 16 and Minor grades worked very well with all the lads getting exposure to a high standard of football and both teams had very successful years. Martin also referred to the fact that 11 players from the Club attended a referee’s course this year, which was the highest representation from any Club and some of the lads assisted with refereeing underage games and the Street Leagues during the year. The Club had representatives on the Westmeath Minor, Under 21 and senior squads and also 7 players from the Club were involved in the under 13 development squad in 2014.

Martin’s Report was followed up with an, as always, superb Secretary’s Report, from Alan Keegan.  Alan ran through all the adult Club activities with specific reference to our Under 21s brilliant campaign, which culminated in a first Championship victory in 37 years, and also our Intermediate’s run to the semi-final of the county Championship and also Intermediate Cup final. Alan thanked the Under 21, Intermediate and Junior team managements for all their hard work and success during the past 12 months. He confirmed that Eddie Bouabbsse is staying on board for 2015. He also thanked all the Club Executive and everyone involved in the Club for their work during the year, including all our very kind sponsors, with specific reference to our new main sponsor for the next three years, Joe and Geraldine Spollen (Spollens Centra, Glasson). He again passed on the Club’s condolences to all members bereaved in 2014. Alan concluded his Report by stating that he was stepping down after three years in the post. He received a huge ovation and much deserved plaudits from the floor for his unstinting work for the Club, not just in his most recent post, but on a continuing basis.

Following Alan’s Report, Sean Kenny (Junior) gave a detailed Treasurer’s Report, which outlined the Income and Expenditure for the Club in 2014. Again Sean indicated that he was not seeking re-election for the forthcoming year. Sean was also thanked for his great work during his time in the post.

Our outgoing Chairman, Pat Cooper then gave a very detailed Report and complimented everyone in the Executive and the Club at large for the way things ran over the past 12 months. Pat also made reference to our plans for the next few years and where we need the Club to go into the future and more detailed discussions regarding same will take place over the course of the year. Pat also indicated that he was stepping down from his position after one year in the post. The members were disappointed to hear this as Pat had done some fantastic work during his year in the Chair. Again Pat was thanked for all his work during the year and we look forward to Pat being able to return to the top table in the future, like Alan and Sean (Junior). All three men’s commitment to the Club was again emphasised by their willingness to continue to be involved in the Club in 2015 and assist us in any way they can.

Following Pat’s address the following officers were elected for forthcoming year-

President: Sean Reid and John O’Hara

Just before the conclusion of the meeting our esteemed assistant Treasurer (only one of the many jobs without titles that he does for the Club!) Matt Keegan, and his wife Sandra (who also does Trojan work on behalf of the Club) were congratulated on the birth of their new baby girl, Eva, on Christmas Eve.
